Sewage Treatment

A combination of centrifuge and high-performance filter

Ships are like small villages or towns: all fresh water on board will eventually become grey water or black water. For these types of effluents, the market offers treatment systems with filters or sometimes additionally with biological or chemical components. In the future these systems will no longer be sufficient for the more stringent regulations.

With a system including a centrifuge for separating coarse impurities, a buffer tank and an ultrafiltration system for removing extremely fine impurities, GEA Westfalia Separator Systems is developing a new sewage treatment system that is expected to be launched on the market in plenty of time before the new IMO guidelines come into force.

Sewage is a new chapter for GEA Westfalia Separator Systems. Separator and decanter installations provide better performance than conventional systems. In particular, they are able to comply with the more stringent internationally valid IMO limits which will come into force in 2010.

The aim is to use centrifuges in combination with high-performance filters, build the systems much smaller than conventional systems, and simultaneously avoid the use of biological processes. This means that the system will become more reliable, and will become less susceptible to external influences. The entry level sewage treatment system from GEA Westfalia Separator Systems uses a type OSD 18 separator combined with an ultrafilter in the form of a compact unit. It is planned to utilise the entire performance range of mineral oil separators.
