“PROFI® will supersede kieselguhr filtration across a broad front“

The practical experience of Carlsberg is very positive in many respects

Practise shows that the combined PROFI® separator/membrane filter process does not only achieve the prime development objective, the complete replacement of kieselguhr. It is also more than an attractive alternative in terms of beer quality, its flexibility and economy. In more and more breweries worldwide.

In 2005, the Danish Carlsberg Group was the first brewing group with world-wide operations to decide to install the kieselguhr-free PROFI® filtration. The separator / membrane filtration line was installed by GEA Westfalia Separator in the Danish brewery Fredericia and was initially operated as a test installation in parallel with the existing kieselguhr filtration. A difficult test at an extremely high level: this was because the kieselguhr installation had already been optimized in terms of its water and kieselguhr consumption. Nevertheless, it quickly became clear that Carlsberg would no longer return to kieselguhr filtration.

Several million litres of beer filtered

Meanwhile two PROFI® lines are operating in Fredericia with an hourly capacity of 400 hl respectively. They have so far been used to filter several million litres of beer. As a result of this experience, Carlsberg has identified the genuine benefit of PROFI® filtration as being that the quality and costs of filtration are absolutely comparable or in many cases even better.

In the opinion of Carlsberg, a second important advantage that PROFI® indeed works continuously and does so fully automatically and extremely reliably. Quote Carlsberg: “With PROFI® you know when you go home in the evening precisely what beer will be in your tanks the next morning.”

Greater flexibility and higher cellar capacity

The next major advantage is seen by Carlsberg to be the flexibility of the PROFI® filtration. In Fredericia, for instance, lager beers as well as stouts and strong beers are filtered, whereby all types are high-gravity beers. For Carlsberg it is therefore also a major advantage that PROFI® enables the system to be changed over to another beer extremely quickly and without any overlap.

And last but not least, a positive side effect must not be forgotten: The product is run directly from the “Unitank“ to the pressure tank cellar via PROFI® filtration. In this way, six large tanks are available for fermentation which previously were required for cold storage. The process times have also been reduced. Carlsberg has consequently increased its cellar capacity without having to invest in additional tank volume.

The conclusion of Carlsberg is quite clear: “There is no doubt that PROFI® will supersede kieselguhr filtration across a broad front. It has already been better for a long time in the opinion of Carlsberg.“

As a pioneer in the field of beer clarification, GEA Westfalia Separator can look back on 100 years of beer separation in 2009. The first separator was installed in a brewery in Vienna in 1909 by the predecessor firm of GEA Westfalia Separator. 100 years of beer separation means a 100 year successful track record. A success story which was not written by chance. It is rather the result of a constant further development of GEA Westfalia Separator. Today, centrifugal separation technology is the first choice in more and more brewery applications.
